'SORRY I CAN'T COME TO  TH PHONE RIGHT NOW...'

This short video was inspired by ‘women on the verge of a nervous breakdown’ a film by Pedro Almodovar based on ‘la voix humaine’ (the human voice) by Jean Cocteau. Part of the premise of the film involves the main character trying to get in touch with her lover who she rarely manages to get in touch with. Because they keep missing each other, his side of the conversation exists however mainly only through recordings from a voicemail. These snippets of voicemail initially is the sole way the viewer gets to know the character of the lover.
I wanted to create a video where the person receiving the voicemail is removed to see how much can be understood from an unknown character via only the fragments of information from each message. The voicemail in particular has a level of intimacy similar to that of a letter, as it is only meant to be heard by that one person, I liked the idea of creating something with the illusion of encroaching on someones privacy and the unease that comes with that.

PHOTO SERIES

With this series I was looking at the idea of the telephone both conceptually and physically. For the images, I used the telephone as a prop but wanted to represent the otherworldly nature of being on the phone; being transported to the life of whoever you’re on the phone to and the intimacy that comes with that. The images with both the old-fashioned telephone and my mobile phone present at this idea of a merging between past and present.
